Plaque
A primary morphology
Definition:
Palpation: raised or depressed and palpable. You can feel it with your finger.
Size: larger than 1 cm
General Explanation for Plaques:
the epidermis and/or dermis are thicker than normal
the epidermis and/or dermis are thinner than normal
Examples:
Primarily epidermal thickening:
Psoriasis
Nummular dermatitis = eczema that is in a circular pattern
Primarily dermal thickening:
Granuloma annulare = deposition of mucin and macrophages in the dermis, often an erythematous plaque in a circular or annular shape on the extremities
Sarcoidosis = cutaneous sarcoid, often known as the "great mimicker" because it can take on many morphologies when the disease affects the skin. Most often it is an erythematous plaque. This is a disease that can affect many organs in the body.
Morphea = a disease causing tight skin in areas affected, often with a lilac hue to the skin
